CZ Shadow 2 and TS 2: competition pistols in Texas

Walk the line at a USPSA match in Texas and you will see CZ Shadow 2s in Production and Carry Optics and TS 2s in Limited, usually in the hands of shooters who are winning. CZ's competition pistols offer a heavy steel frame, a superb trigger and a low bore axis at a price below the custom guns they beat. This guide explains the models, the divisions they fit and how Texans set them up. Shadow 2

A full-size steel 9mm based on the CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow, about 46 ounces unloaded with a 4.9-inch barrel, a 17-round magazine (19 with extended base pads), a DA/SA trigger tuned from the factory to roughly 8 pounds double-action and 3.5 to 4 pounds single-action, an ambidextrous thumb safety, an undercut trigger guard, a swappable magazine release and a fiber-optic front sight with an adjustable rear. The blue-grip version is the recognizable one; black, urban grey and orange variants exist. The weight is the point: the gun barely moves in recoil.

Shadow 2 OR and Compact

The Shadow 2 OR (optics-ready) has a slide cut with a plate system for the common footprints and is the Carry Optics pistol. The Shadow 2 Compact, introduced in 2024, shortens the barrel to 4 inches and lightens the frame with aluminum for a carry-capable Shadow at about 30 ounces, with an optic cut; it fits Carry Optics too and is the model for shooters who want one gun for match and belt.

TS 2

The Tactical Sport 2 is a single-action-only steel pistol built for USPSA Limited: a 5.2-inch barrel, about 48 ounces, 20-round magazines in 9mm (and .40 S&W for major power factor), a single-action trigger from the factory around 3 pounds, a large frame-mounted safety and a slide with an extended dust cover. It is not a carry gun and does not pretend to be. The TS 2 Racing Green and Orange variants add tuning and a heavier grip.

Which division

USPSA Production: Shadow 2 with iron sights. The class where the gun made its name.
USPSA Carry Optics: Shadow 2 OR or Shadow 2 Compact with a red dot.
USPSA Limited and Limited Optics: TS 2 in .40 or 9mm, or a Shadow 2 in Limited Minor.
IDPA: Shadow 2 in ESP or SSP depending on modifications; TS 2 in ESP (check current rulebook weight limits).
Steel Challenge: any of them; the TS 2 and an optic-mounted Shadow 2 are common.

Triggers and tuning

Stock Shadow 2 triggers are good enough that many shooters compete unmodified. The common upgrades are a competition hammer and lighter springs to bring the double-action pull down to 6 pounds or less while keeping reliable ignition with the primers you use, and a short-reset disconnector. CZ Custom and Cajun Gun Works are the established sources. On the TS 2, most owners leave the trigger alone and change only the grips and the magazine well.

Optics

The OR plate system covers the Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, C-More and Holosun footprints among others; buy the plate for your dot from CZ or a maker that lists the Shadow 2. Frame-mounted optic setups for the TS 2 exist for shooters who want the dot still during recoil. Taller iron sights are needed if you want irons through the window.

Magazines

Shadow 2 magazines are the 75-family pattern in 17 and 19 rounds; TS 2 magazines are their own pattern in 20 rounds, longer with extended base pads to the 140mm Limited gauge. Buy five or more for matches. Texas has no capacity limit, so every version ships to Texas.

Grips, magwells and small parts

Thin aluminum grips, aggressive Lok grips, extended magazine releases, flared magwells and fiber-optic front sights in narrower widths are the standard first purchases. None changes the pistol's legal status. Keep the factory parts for resale.

Ammunition

Production and Carry Optics are scored minor, so 9mm 115- to 147-grain loads at around 130 power factor are the norm; heavier bullets feel softer in a heavy gun. Limited shooters running .40 load to 165 power factor for major. Steel-framed CZs are indifferent to steel-cased practice ammunition but competitors mostly shoot brass.

Where to shoot in Texas

Texas has one of the largest match calendars in the country: USPSA sections in North Texas, Central Texas, South Texas and West Texas run weekly club matches, IDPA clubs cover every metro, and Steel Challenge matches run year-round because the weather allows it. Practiscore lists them. New shooters are welcome at club matches; bring the pistol, five magazines, a belt holster and eye and ear protection.

Maintenance

Steel CZs like oil on the rails and a clean breech face. Recoil springs are a wear item every few thousand rounds, and the Shadow 2's extractor and firing-pin block should be cleaned when the gun starts to feel gritty. A 46-ounce pistol will outlast its owner if it is kept oiled.
